Find out about our midwife-led unit review

We are currently reviewing midwife-led unit (MLUs) services across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.

Our review is split into two phases:

  • Phase one - Phase one of our review involved a desktop exercise where we collected information about the MLU service. This included national and local best practice as well as collecting existing feedback from local stakeholders.
  • Phase two - Phase two of our review is looking at more detailed information about the service and asking local people for their feedback. We commissioned ELC Works, an independent organisation, to hold in-depth interviews with women, their families and staff who are using and working in the midwife-led units. Their feedback is now being used to help us better understand what is working well and what can be improved.

In addition to the consultant led units at the Princess Royal Hospital, there are a range of community services available through midwife-led units. Antenatal, Birth, and Postnatal care are provided in midwife-led units in Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford. The Trust also provides Antenatal, Postnatal and Home birth care in Market Drayton and Whitchurch.

The review is looking at how the midwife-led units meet the needs of local families and fulfil national guidelines.

Next stages of engagement:

Community workshops - In September 2017 we will be holding a series of co-design workshops; bringing women, their families, professionals and others with an interest in these services, together to discuss what the future service model should look like.  Further information about the workshops, locations and dates are available here..

All of the information from the engagement as well as the information gathered in Phase 1 of the review will help inform the next stage.

Next steps

At the moment no decisions have been made and we have not started a formal consultation. We have commissioned an external company ELC Works to manage this engagement activity and provide independent analysis of local feedback.

We will be reviewing their report alongside our own data, feedback from Healthwatch and interest groups and the Hospital Trust’s own review, to develop a strategy for local midwife-led services.
