Cancer Services Engagement Event

IJean and others 2Over 60 people attended the Cancer Strategy Engagement Event on Tuesday 27th March 2018, which was hosted by Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and was held at The Wakes, Oakengates, Telford.

Over half of the people who attended the event were people who had been affected by cancer others included health professionals and support workers.

The aim of the event was to:-

  • Enable participants to understand why a Collaborative Cancer Strategy is being developed, what it is and how people could contribute
  • Share and improve understanding and experiences at all stages of the cancer pathway
  • Jointly agree what is working well across the local cancer pathway, what improvements are needed and what priorities for improvement are

The afternoon started with a brief overview of prevention, signs and symptoms of cancer  given by Public Health followed by a talk from the Lead Cancer Nurse from Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals explaining care given in hospitals, treatment and after care.  The major part of the day however was all about listening to and sharing experience and knowledge of cancer services and support. Everyone had the opportunity to have facilitated discussions in small groups, which was lively  informative and very constructive.

Cancer Event Room ShotThe feedback from discussions included improving local promotion of cancer signs and symptoms, increasing prevention and cancer screening uptake to improving the  consistency and availability of aftercare and support in the months and years after receiving treatment..

The full report of the event can be seen here.

Next step

Following the event, a Cancer Survey is now available for people to have their say about local services and support.  A hard copy of the survey can be obtained here.  All feedback received, will be used to help produce a collaborative Cancer Strategy across the whole of Shropshire.
