Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire CCG support Nutrition and Hydration Week 12 - 18 March 2018

As part of Nutrition and Hydration Week, starting this Monday 12 March, Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Groups are encouraging people to think about the importance of staying hydrated and well nourished.

 Christine Morris, Executive Nurse & Deputy Chief Officer at Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “What we eat and drink can have a huge impact on both our physical and mental health. During Nutrition and Hydration week we are trying to highlight the importance of eating your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and drinking plenty of water. These simple improvements really can make a big difference to your body and mind.”

In the UK it is estimated that up to 100,000 deaths[1] are associated with acute kidney injury of which up to a third could be avoided by simply staying hydrated. Similarly at least three million people in the UK are malnourished with malnourished adults accounting for 30% of hospital admissions and 35% of care home admissions.[2]

To raise awareness the CCG’s have formed a local health economy group which have developed a range of materials to promote key proactive and preventative messages which have been distributed to all local care homes to support this initiative.

In addition on Wednesday, 14 March, it is World Tea Party Day.  People in health and social care settings across the globe will be holding afternoon tea parties, promoting the everyday work of different organisations that are committed to improve nutritional intake.
