NHS England has introduced a national scheme which ensures that everyone registered with a GP practice has easier and more convenient access to additional GP appointments from 1 October 2018 – including at evenings, weekends and over bank holidays.
In developing the extended access model to meet local needs, the Telford and Wrekin CCG has worked with patients, GP practices and Shropdoc.
Appointments will be available locally between 8.00 am and 8pm Monday to Friday and via the Shropshire central hub at weekends and bank holidays.
To get access to the appointments patients should ring their own GP practice as they would normally. The extended access appointments may however be at another location.
Patients will see notices explaining the scheme in their practices, via the practice website and by speaking to practice reception teams.
The Chair of the CCG Primary Care Committee, Peter Eastaugh says “this investment benefits our patients by delivering over 100 hours of additional general practice appointments per week for our local Telford and Wrekin registered patients. This will not only support improved patient outcomes but also support GP practices manage the growing demand on their primary care services”.
