Appointments available to patients in Telford and Wrekin over Christmas

Health bosses at Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are reminding people they can now access more appointments during the evening, at weekends and on bank holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

David Evans, Accountable Officer for Telford and Wrekin CCG, said: “Christmas is a really busy time of year but it’s important to make sure you don’t neglect your health. We want to remind our local residents that, while most GP practices will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, there are some that will be open from 8am to 8pm. So if you find yourself, or someone you know, feeling unwell then appointments are available to book on these days to see a GP, nurse or other health professional.”

As part of the Extended Access Service, patients are able to pre-book appointments by contacting their own GP practice during normal opening hours. If a patient is unable to get through to their own practice or the practice is closed the call will be diverted to the Extended Access Call Centre and they will be offered an appointment with a local GP, nurse or other healthcare professional.

Dr Jo Leahy, Chair of Telford and Wrekin CCG, said: “In addition to pre-bookable appointments, a number of pharmacies will be open for limited hours, on a rota on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Your pharmacist will be able to give you free advice on minor conditions and over the counter treatments.”

Pharmacy opening times can be found on the CCGs website: telfordccg.nhs.uk

Dr Leahy, added: “For anyone who needs urgent medical help or advice they can call NHS 111 for free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or they can access the service online at 111.nhs.uk.”
